Biography

Stephen earned his place on the Main Tour for 1999/00 after qualifying via the UK Tour and winning no less than ten matches in the world championship qualifying rounds. In his first full season on the circuit he reached the last 32 in both the British and China Opens and was ranked 100. He also made a maximum break in the first round of the 2000 Regal Scottish Open even though he went on to lose the match. In the autumn of 2000 he won the IBSF World (Amateur) Championship over in China and two more last 32 finishes in ranking events, including the China Open again moved him up to 52nd.

2001/2 was a mixture of first round defeats and a few better results, which resulted in him maintaining his ranking position, but not improving it. His first last 16 finish came in the 2002 British Open and he repeated this achievement later that same season in the Citywest Irish Masters moving him up eleven places in the rankings.

The 2003/4 season was a strange one which he began by losing his opening match in the LG Cup and the same thing happened in the penultimate event, the Player's Championship. In between he reached the last 32 of the UK Championship and the Welsh Open before going over to Malta for the European Open. There he beat Peter Ebdon and John Higgins on the way to the final where he came up against Jimmy White who he trounced 9-3 to collect his first ranking title. He also reached the Crucible stage of the world championship fore the first time and gave Ronnie O'Sullivan a tough match.

He was now assured of a place in the top 32 for the 2004/5 season with the top 16 a real possibility in the near future. A regular practice partner of Stephen Hendry, he looks certain to be around the latter stages of the major events for the next few seasons at least.
