Michael first
started playing snooker when he was just nine years old. His
parents took him to a local social club which had a snooker
table and soon he was hooked.
Wild reached his
first tournament final aged ten in a local tournament in
Trafford.
His first major
final was the Pontins Star of the Future when he was 13, he lost
3-2.
And he developed
an unfortunate knack of losing finals as in successive years he
reached the final, but lost, in the English Under 15, UK Under
19 and again in the Under 19.
He earned
selection as an English senior international, helping his team
to victory in the 2002 Home Internationals.
His passport to
professional status came on the back of a win over Drew Henry in
the UK Tour, which secured his Challenge Tour place.
After a season's
consolidation when he narrowly missed promotion, he made no
mistake in the 2002-3 season, reaching the last 16 in two
events, which helped push him up to 13 on the ranking list and
earn him promotion to the WSA Main Tour for the first time.
