PITTER, PATTER, POTTER PATERSON - Scottish Under 14’s No.5

David Paterson continued his dominance of the Under 14’s with his fourth tournament win in five outings.

He wrapped up the event with the minimum of fuss, dropping his only frame all day, in the final against Shaun McDermott.

The Kilwinning 14 year old is odds on to finish the season as no.1 and is the hot favourite to win the Under 14 Championship.

He is also well placed at no.4 on the Under 16s ranking list, well placed to make the Junior International side.

PHIL-BINS ANOTHER WIN - Scottish Senior No.5

Michael Philbin wrapped up his third event of the season and all but guaranteed another appearance in the Scottish International team this September.

He also moved a step closer to the Challenge Tour place he’s been chasing all season long, as he stretched his lead at the top of the rankings.

Glaswegian Richy McDonald had to withdraw at the quarter final stage due to other commitments and this left the way clear for the 33 year old from Bo’ness to wrap up another ranking success.

Philbin and McDonald have won all five events between them this season so far, with Philbin 3-2 ahead at the moment.

The race for the eight slots in the international side is reaching fever pitch.

With only two tournaments remaining, there are still some twenty players with a realistic chance of making the side, so the last two tournaments should be very exciting.

McGILL BAGS ANOTHER WIN - Scottish Under 16’s No.5

Glaswegian 13 year old Anthony McGill won his second tournament of the season to stretch his lead at the top of the Under 16s rankings and virtually guaranteed his spot on the junior international side.  Young McGill, despite only being 13 decided not to compete at Under 14 level this season opting instead to compete in the higher age groups of Under 16s, Under 19s and at Senior level.

He already has an appearance in the Last 16 stage of a senior event and is also doing well in the Under 19s so his decision seems to be paying off.

He was pushed all the way in this event with narrow 3-2 wins over 14 year old Scott Finlayson and Glaswegian Anthony Hughes, who has qualified to represent Scotland at the European Under 19 Championships aged just 15.  The final against Tom Noble was a titanic struggle, which went one way and then the other, but Anthony held himself together and secured the final frame and a 4-3 success to wrap up the match and secure his second title of the season.

TWO IN EIGHT FOR McGILL - Scottish Under 19’s No.5

Anthony McGill won his second tournament in eight days and moved up to no.6 on the Under 19s ranking list.

The junior sensation, who only turned thirteen at the start of February, practices at the same club as John Higgins, and young McGill is showing the potential to emulate his hero and go all the way to the top.

He white washed everyone he played with the exception of Lanarkshire 15 year old Michael Collumb.  McGill and Collumb have developed quite a rivalry this season at both Under 16 and Under 19 level, and both are also competing at senior level.  The Glaswegian edged their latest encounter, a quarter final tie 3-2 and moved on to wrap up the tournament without dropping another frame.

Young McGill is showing considerable talent and many a senior is quaking in their boots at the thought of being turned over by a 13 year old!

There however, he had to fight every step of the way.  After 4 frames he found himself 3-1 down to Paul Brechin, but he managed to dig deep and win 3 frames on the spin for a hard fought 4-3 victory.

His win has stretched his already impressive lead at the top of the Under 19 rankings and the rest of the field will have to up their game if they're going to catch him.

A 5-3 win over Ian Wilkie in event two, made it two out two for the thirty-three year old from Linlithgow.

A member of Scotland’s victorious Home Internationals team, Philbin had a far from easy run to the final, having to survive a final frame shoot out against Derek Pitman, to reach the final.

Wilkie also had to clinch a final frame victory, against Francis Hughes in their semi final.

2002-3 RESULTS ROUNDS UP

James McBain (left) ousted defending champion Gary Thomson (right) by a 7-3 margin to take the 2002-3 Scottish title.

McBain, who, along with Thomson, will represent Scotland in Germany for the 2003 European championships in May, was in superb form from the start. This despite both player requesting a change from a "ping pong ball" to a proper cue ball!

Prior to the white being changed Thomson attempted a follow through and the white screwed back, Thomson missed and McBain stepped in with a 76 clearance. Further breaks of 72 and 68 gave McBain a 3-0 lead, before Thomson could make any impression. Thomson grabbed the fourth and a rare miss from McBain gave Thomson the chance to take the fifth with a run of 68. McBain moved into top gear in the next, with the tournament high break, a superb 137 total clearance and despite a brief rally from Thomson, McBain rattled off the last three frames for victory, to take the National Senior title for the first time. His win took McBain to the top of the Scottish Senior Rankings, with Thomson second.

As well as earning the trip to the European Championships, the pair will also compete in the IBSF World Championship in October in China.
