EXCERPTS:

Chapter 5 - Hendry on the Horizon

While Steve Davis continued to dominate the 1980?s winning tournament after tournament and three more Embassy world championships to take his total to six, he was also runner-up to Joe Johnson in 1986; another name was flexing his muscles in the background.

He was, of course,Stephen Hendry who turned professional in 1985 and played his first game in the Goya Matchroom trophy that same year beating Barry West 5-4.

Who was the first player to beat him? It was in the next round and is a real trivia tester. Take 10 points for coming up with the name of the late Eddie McLaughlin, another Scottish professional.

Hendry was groomed for stardom with a series of test matches against Davis in various Scottish towns. He lost them all but the die had been cast and the youngster, he was then just 17, was not turning back for anyone.
