DAVIS IS HOMEWARD BOUND                                                                                           4 NOVEMBER 2004

Mark Davis booked himself an appearance at his local venue, the Brighton Centre, with a 5-1 win over Marcus Campbell. And Davis will play another Scot, Drew Henry, when the British Open final stages resume next Monday.

Davis dominated a largely scrappy match and breaks of 40, 57 twice, and 39 were enough to see the St. Leonard's-on-Sea player get a trip home.

Other seeded players weren't so fortunate and eight crashed out at the first hurdle.

Belgium's Bjorn Haneveer constructed breaks of 59, 81, 101 and 51 in a gritty 5-4 win over Patrick Wallace.

And two more of snooker's overseas brigade, and the two brightest young up and coming stars, Ding Junhui and Neil Robertson booked their place in the final stages.

Robertson recovered from a 2-0 deficit against Brian Morgan, who stroked in 93 in the opening frame. A colours clearance gave the Aussie the third frame and breaks of 55 and 74 earned him a 3-2 lead.

A pink ball victory stretched the lead to 4-2 and 42 was enough to secure victory. Robertson faces Scotland's Stephen Maguire in Brighton.

China's Ding Junhui beat Finland's Robin Hull 5-2. He won a scrappy opener and a break of 62 opened a 2-0 lead. Hull won a disjointed third and drew level with his best effort of the match, 63.

The fifth went to Ding on the pink and having gained the lead he surged away with breaks of 52 and 60. He will now play Tony Drago, in what promises to be an intriguing encounter.

David Roe struck a blow for the older players, beating Michael Judge 5-3 and his Derbyshire neighbour, Nigel Bond, stormed to a 5-1 win over Sean Storey. Bond cantered into a 3-0 lead, scoring 240 points to Storey's 8. The Grimsby man snatched a half-hour fifth on the colours, but Bond registered another 203 points as he dominated the next two frames.

Another of snooker's senior citizens, Dave Harold, won his first match since he broke his wrist last Christmas. The Stoke man boosted his confidence with a 137 total clearance in the fifth frame and also made four breaks in the forties for a comfortable 5-1 win against Rod Lawler.

Ryan Day rattled up breaks of 87 and 109 in the first two frames against Nick Walker. He made 55 in the third, but Walker cleared from blue to black to gain a toe hold in the match.

But it was a brief revival and Day ran in further breaks of 54, 44 and 71 to close out the match.

Andy Hicks set up a match against Dominic Dale, recovering a 2-0 deficit to beat James Wattana 5-3.

A break of 84 sparked his recovery and he made 53 and 56 to take a 3-2 lead. Wattana compiled 67 in the second and 84 in the sixth, but it was Hicks who won all the close frames.
