2004 IBSF WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP - Trigger Happy?                                                29 November 2004

If there is an award for the bravest performance in this year's IBSF World Championships in Velthoven, then it will undoubtedly be awarded to England's Alan Trigg.

On Friday Trigg, a former professional from Leeds, collapsed in agony in his room, having trapped the sciatic nerve in his back.

Under the tournament conditions, genuine medical grounds allow for rescheduling of matches.

But by Sunday tea time, time was up for the European Seniors Champion and he had to take to the table or forfeit matches.

He was wheeled to the table by partner Viv, and played in obvious agony. Bending for the shot wasn't the major problem, but walking and lateral movement brought grimaces of pain.

But Trigg doesn't let a little thing like that get him down. And not only has he won two matches out of three since his injury, but he smacked in a 113 break against France's Daniel Poly and was furious with himself for missing the blue, which, had he cleared up, would have set a new high break target in the seniors event.

With such a handicap Trigg wasn't given much chance in Monday afternoon's match against the wily former European Seniors Champion, Joe Delaney from Ireland. But Trigg confounded both Delaney and the sceptics, by toughing it out for a 3-0 victory.

Those victories have sealed his qualification for the knock out draw on Tuesday night, with seven wins safely in the bag.

Only Australia's Glen Wilkinson and Robby Foldvari maintain unbeaten records in the Seniors event and the former professionals have an identical record so it will be a toss of the coin for who becomes the number one seed.

Finland's Jyri Virtanen has posted 8 wins, including a thrilling final frame victory over Dene O'Kane. Welshman Ron Jones has a similar record, having lost just one match, to his 'bogey man' Ireland's Brendan Cooney.

Virtanen's only loss came on Monday night, when he lost his 100% record to Colin Mitchell. It was a 'must-win' match for Mitchell and he ran out a 3-1 winner commenting afterwards "I sweat a pint of blood on every shot out there tonight."
