SNOOKER WORLD BIDS FAREWELL TO COLIN BRINDED                                               26 November 2005

The death of leading professional referee Colin Brinded, has shocked the snooker world today.

Fifty-nine year old Brinded, from Great Yarmouth, had been suffering from cancer since the summer, and had just started a course of treatment, when the shock news of his death at 6am on Saturday 26 November, was announced.

Colin was  a referee who'd officiated at the very pinnacle of his sport, making his debut in 1976. The highlight of his career came in 1999 when he donned the gloves to referee the World Championship final.

His last duty was at the PIOS in the summer, when he presented event winner Mark Joyce with his trophy.

Despite being a well known face on television and hugely popular with both players and fans, Colin never lost touch with his roots, retaining an active interest in the Norfolk B&SA, together with his brother Russell.

Fellow referees were quick to pay tribute to their friend and colleague. Holland's Jan Verhaas said "We're all devastated. Colin was a friend, such a kind man, we will all miss him so much."

EBSRA Chairman Simon Smith added. "It's desperately sad news. Colin was a well loved and highly respected figure. He was a consummate professional in his work and an inspiration to us all. Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this sad time."
