Global Snooker Countries - Iceland
Iceland is one longest established
European snooker countries, and from a small player base they have
made a lasting impact in international competition.
Players such as Kristjan Helgason,
Johannes B Johannesson (Big Joe), Johannes R. Johannesson (Little Joe)
and Brynjar Valdimarsson have ensured Iceland's name is known world
wide.
It was Valdimarsson who first hit the
headlines for Iceland in 1991, when he beat former world champion John
Spencer in the Mita World Masters.
Kristjan Helgason has brought the
Icelandic snooker its most prestigious achievements to date. The
Icelander shot to fame when he became the first player from his
country to qualify to play in the Embassy World championship at the
famous Crucible Theatre and for the 2003-4 season he is ranked No. 66
in the world.
Icelandic players also seem to have had
the knack of attracting wide media attention over the years, which has
helped to promote awareness of Icelandic snooker. From male models,
boy friends of Spice girls, an opera singer, a player with an
artificial leg and many excruciating puns on the theme of Ice, the
journalists have been more than happy to put pen to paper - and that's
just off the table!
In the 2003-4 season Helgason's
countryman 'Big Joe' Johannesson
qualified to play onthe WSA
Challenge Tour and in 2004 Brynjar Validmarsson emulated that
achievement and will play the 2004-5 Challenge Tour
Iceland has also proved a popular venue
for several superbly organised and run international events.

As you can see, these records still have gaps.
If anyone has any further information then I'd love to hear from
you.
