Global Snooker Countries -
Belgium
Snooker in Europe is on the up and up and no
country typifies that more than Belgium, who through the exploits of
Bjorn Haneveer have suddenly come to the attention of the wider
snooker world.
Belgian competitors have featured over the years, in many European
and IBSF events, but undoubtedly Bjorn Haneveer holds the most
successful record, first as an amateur, and now Belgium's
first player to break into the top 64 in the world rankings.
Between Main Tour events, Bjorn returns home to
compete in domestic events, giving his fellow countryman a target to
aim at and a hard act to follow. In the 2001-2 season Bjorn
has compiled a maximum 147 in a Belgian ranking event.
Belgium competitors can usually be guaranteed to
feature in the latter stages of Eurotour events and several have
qualified to compete on the World professional circuit over the
years.
Belgium are also leading the way in world ladies
snooker, with teenager Wendy Jans by far the most successful lady
competitor from the Continent. She is the unofficial world ladies
number one as former champion Kelly Fisher has now gone to play pool
in America. To underline her status Jans won her first ranking
tournament in 2003 and after five times being runner up in the
European Championship, eventually lifted the title in 2004.
Kevin van Hove
emphasised that there is plenty of emerging talent in Belgium, by
winning both the Junior Seniors Belgian title in 2004. He backed
that up by coming through the European Play offs to claim a place on
the 2004-5 WSA Challenge Tour.
